Review of SB 179 Requirements for Implementing a Comprehensive School Counseling Program






SB 179 enacted during the 87th legislative session set forth requirements for school counselors to spend 80% of their time implementing the Texas Model Comprehensive Counseling Program.  This session will cover to four components of a Comprehensive Counseling Model as well as look at practical ways to implement the program and how to collect data to inform decision-making. Other topics include the District Annual Assessment requirement outlined in 19 TAC 61.1073.

The objectives of this session include:

  • An overview of the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs
  • Guidance and information about the Continuing Education Requirements for Principals and Counselors per TEC 21.054 (e) and (f)
  • Aligning school counseling goals with the overall campus goals and mission
  • An overview of how the Texas Model fits into the organizational framework of MTSS
  • To review the Texas School Counselor Evaluation requirements and tools
