Mathematical Problem Solving and Discourse, Grade 1
1st Grade

Mathematical problem solving does not come naturally to many students, and as educators of first graders, we must provide them with opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of problem solving within life experiences and how that moves into mathematics. In this 3-hour virtual session, participants will identify actions of proficient problem solvers and build an understanding of the following:

  • mathematical discussions that compliment the use of a heuristic
  • formative assessment strategies that focus on making student thinking visible
  • five practices that support mathematical discourse to strengthen student voice

Important Session Information:

This session is Day 2 and the final session of the Problem Solving and Discourse, Grade 1 training. It is a 3-hour virtual learning session that occurs after the Day 1 virtual session and the six-week online component.

Note: Full three-day attendance of a Mathematics Achievement Academy is required prior to participation, as well as completion of the details described above.
