This session will cover an introduction to the RLA Research Based Instructional Strategies (RBIS) and how they work collectively to build a solid foundation for reading instruction based on the Science of Reading.

  • Foundational Skills: Explicit, systematic practice with Literacy Foundational Skills.
  • Text Complexity: Regular practice with grade-level, complex text, and its academic language.
  • Knowledge Coherence: Building knowledge and vocabulary through text in all content areas.
  • Text Based Responses: Reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational.

Important Session Information:


These research-based instructional strategies represent the most significant changes needed to bridge the gap between research and practice in a RLA classroom. The RLA RBIS fit into the Simple View of Reading and incorporate the Science of Teaching Reading.
