Middle school math (6-8) introduces many new mathematical ideas within the concepts of algebra, proportional reasoning, and geometry. Given the new testing constructs, as well as the call for deeper understanding of these concepts in the STEM fields, teachers often find themselves asked to introduce these ideas in a manner very different from how they were taught and currently understand. Using resources such as Making Sense of Mathematics for Teaching (Grades 6-8) by Nolan, Dixon, Roy, and Andreasen, we will explore the why before the how of these concepts for instructor first, then for the instruction of the students.
