Biliteracy Institute 1-5
Strategies for Biliteracy Development

This workshop is for Grade 1–5 bilingual and dual language educators. Participants will examine how biliteracy develops over time and how literacy skills transfer across languages. We will explore practical instructional routines that integrate structured bridging and formative biliteracy assessment. Drawing on research on biliteracy trajectories, participants will learn to intentionally plan instruction that develops bilingual readers, writers, thinkers, and communicators. Research consistently supports the importance of paired literacy, explicit cross-language connections, sustained instruction in both languages, and holistic assessment of bilingual learners rather than evaluating them through monolingual frameworks.

Important Session Information:

Students become successful biliterate readers and writers when teachers intentionally develop literacy across both languages, leverage students' complete linguistic repertoires, make explicit cross-language connections, and design instruction that strengthens language, literacy, and content simultaneously. Throughout the day, teachers will experience model lessons, analyze student work, redesign literacy instruction, practice teacher moves, create bilingual learning experiences, and leave with classroom-ready planning tools that can be implemented immediately.
