From Text Sets to Thoughtful Writing: Designing Knowledge-Building Literacy Units






Complex texts deepen literacy growth—but it is writing that solidifies understanding. This session guides secondary educators in designing knowledge-building units that integrate complex text sets with purposeful, text-dependent writing. Participants will explore how strategically sequenced texts aligned to the RLA TEKS build background knowledge, expand vocabulary, and sustain rigor without over-scaffolding. Teachers will analyze text complexity, design questioning that promotes deep thinking, and create short and extended writing tasks that strengthen analysis and synthesis. Emphasis is placed on calibrating rigor, supporting novice writers, and building feedback systems that reinforce comprehension. Educators will leave equipped to move beyond isolated texts and disconnected prompts toward cohesive reading–writing instruction that drives lasting understanding.
