Rigor Recalibrated: Designing Authentic Assessments That Demand Thinking

When rigor is reduced to workload, assessments become predictable—and thinking declines. This session challenges educators to recalibrate their understanding of cognitive demand and design assessments that prioritize authentic, transferable thinking over compliance. Participants will analyze current classroom tasks to determine whether they truly require evidence analysis, inference, synthesis, and written justification across strands. Through guided redesign, teachers will examine questioning patterns, identify subtle ways expectations are lowered, and create varied assessment experiences that reflect TEKS cognitive demands. This studio-style session equips educators to reduce assessment fatigue while elevating intellectual engagement and preparing students to think deeply in any academic context.
