Structure + Soul: Building Thinking-Centered Literacy Classrooms

New teachers often feel forced to choose between classroom control and intellectual rigor—but effective literacy classrooms require both. This session blends practical management systems with relationship-driven instructional moves to help novice secondary educators build structured, thinking-centered classrooms. Participants will design routines for reading, discussion, writing workshop, and collaboration while exploring how clarity, expectations, and questioning shape student engagement. Teachers will examine the difference between rigor and difficulty, learn how over-scaffolding reduces thinking, and develop systems that preserve cognitive demand while reducing disruptions. Educators will leave with concrete routines, discourse strategies, and culture-building practices that support both strong relationships and strong literacy instruction.
