Perkins School for the Blind
Presented by Megan Schmittel
The following course will look at the social/emotional and mental health needs of students with complex disabilities through the lens of self-regulation. Participants in the course will define the four different types of self-regulation, and how each type of self-regulation develops in typically developing children. Participants will learn how complex disabilities impact the development of self-regulation, and identify how self-regulation in their students might be impacted given their students’ individual profiles. Participants will learn how self-regulation impacts students’ social/emotional skills and overall mental health. The course will review various mental health disorders and the difficulties with self-regulation within these disorders. Finally, participants will learn and develop various lesson plans to help teach self-regulation skills in order to target students social-emotional development and mental health.
